Upgraded My Website

Well, I have upgraded my website by making some of the paintings available for purchase using PayPal.  So far I have spent all day yesterday doing this.  I am sure that is why people get paid to do websites.  It is a lot of work.

Peony Bouquet 2

This is the latest watercolor started at the gallery in Clayton.  It includes some of my old techniques of layers of controlled washes and some new techniques I am trying using more water and paint with colors that flow into one another.

Inner Fall

I went to the Inner Fall Exhibit reception tonight at Framations Gallery. I did not win a prize, but I did jury in to the show, which is great for me at this point. Above is Autumn on Oak Street a watercolor that juried in. Fee Fee Cemetery was an oil painting that juried in, but I cannot find the jpg right now.

Winter Sledding

Memories from Hellebusch Park. An oil painting I finished recently at Artists of Grace.

Flight to Egypt

The flight into Egypt is a biblical event described in the Gospel of Matthew (2:13), in which Joseph fled to Egypt with his wife Mary and infant son Jesus after a visit by Magi because they learn that King Herod intends to kill the infants of that area. The episode is frequently shown in art, as the final episode of the Nativity of Jesus in art, and was a common component in cycles of the Life of the Virgin as well as the Life of Christ. An oil painting I finished for Christmas at Artists of Grace

The Annunciation

The Annunciation -- the announcement by the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would become the mother of Jesus ... a painting I finished at Artists of Grace

Bridgeton Arts and Crafts

Got to talk to a lot of folks at the Bridgeton Arts and Crafts Fair. Thanks to the folks who bought things. I hope the folks who took cards and were looking for paintings find something on my website or contact me for a special order. It takes a while to be sure you want a specific painting. I have read that it takes about three looks--so I hope folks will go to the website and keep looking.

Choosing a Painting for a Loft or Multiple Story Space

If you are choosing a painting for a loft, multiple story space, below a balcony or on a cathedral ceiling space; think about choosing a gallery wrapped painting instead of a framed painting. A gallery wrapped painting that the artist has continued the painting around the edges can present interesting new aspects when seen from above, below or different angles. Looking down from a balcony, painting continued around the top edge gives a new feel to the painting rather than seeing it straight on. The painted side and top edges change the look as one goes up the stairs.

Fall

Walked down to Fee Fee Cemetary this afternoon to take pictures--some beautiful fall trees. Couldn't get the angle I wanted to include the old building, trees and tomb stones. Might try a plein air painting tomorrow.

Wheels

A watercolor I finished today from a picture I took of bikes at Wildwood.

Frontier Park

Started this as a Plein Air Quick Paint, but did not really like it so I have been revising it. I don't think I am done yet.

St. Charles Plein Air Competition

Picture of me painting in the St. Charles Plein Air Competition taken by James Moore.

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

These are the two quick paints that I did in the St. Charles Plein Air Competition. I am going to try to go and just paint one today that is not a quick paint. I am pretty tired after doing the Faust Park show and then Plein Air. My house is a wreck and I need to do laundry. I was also struggling with the medium because the new canvas boards on wood ground don't seem to take the paint in the same way. I am going to try taking a brush today instead of palette knife or maybe both. One thing I like is no one else's work looks like mine.

Evening at the Park

A painting done this Holiday Weekend at Helebusch Park in Bridgeton, Mo. I started this around 5:00 pm. I worked en plein air with palette knife and oils on stretched canvas. The canvas was not sitting well on my easel for some reason and the day was windy, but I got most of it done before the light left. I did a few details today in the studio. I took pictures of it with my digital camera and when I looked at the picture it suggested things that needed work. I am going to call it finished now.

Pear Still Life from 2009

You can see the subdued colors from last year and the tighter painting. I still like both.

Peony Bouquet 2

Just finished the Peony Bouquet 2 at the Northside Art Gallery in Clayton on Friday. Pumping up the color level--Charles Reid's influence. Can't quite let if flow like he does, but I am enjoying the contour drawing idea. The Pear Still Life is from last year. Colors are more subdued and painting tighter.

Jewel Box 2

Reworked this a little and took picture with different lighting. I like it better.

Jewel Box

I was finishing up a plain air painting of the Jewel Box and upon deciding I was done I noticed that it was clouding up. Packed up and drove--on my way west I see more and more clouds. As I turned onto Fee Fee about 2 blocks from my house I saw lightning in the west over St. Charles way. Got in my garage and heard thunder. Unloaded the painting and took a picture. Rain is hitting my windows as I type. Got a blessing of perfect timing today.

The Jewel Box is a glass building in Forest Park (St. Louis, Mo), which was built in 1936 and is locally significant in the area of architecture. The Art Deco building is an outstanding example of greenhouse design. It contains displays of flowers and plants. I painted the outside.

Urban Cloud Mass

A studio painting done at Artists of Grace and completed at home. This was done from a photo I took of a Summer storm coming in from the West.

Dad's Flowers

Painted at Artists of Grace awhile ago, I just brought it home recently. It was on display in the Grace Gallery. It is a studio painting of oil on stretched canvas. It was painted from a photo of iris from my garden along with some flowers from my Dad's funeral. I brought the iris in and they had been damaged by a storm. I though I would paint the darkness and damage related to feelings about losing my parents, but as I painted it turned into a painting of beauty and the idea that Jesus said In my Father's House are many mansions . . . I go to prepare a place for you. The light in the background is a road forward.

Jacob the Bard

This is a fantasy oriented oil painting on stretched canvas. I finished this a while ago at Artists of Grace, but I am running behind on posting. Summer yard work seems to be taking up my time this year. I have more work finished that I have not photographed nor posted.

I did this 9x12 watercolor at the gallery last week. It is worked over. I should have stopped. It was nice and free and wet at one time.

Done from a still life set up at Artists of Grace. Another oil painting experiment with light and color and the palette knife.

Evening Farm

This was the painting I did at the gallery this week. Although I like this, I will probably do another from this image. I took off from a photo of my daughter's.

St. Charles ArtWalk

I painted this at the St. Charles ArtWalk. It was a good time. I painted some others but I need to work on them some more. We had artists doing photos, art from video frames with enhancement, pastel artist, elegant painted scarves, jewely and pottery. This was all in Remington's which was the store I was in. They have a lot of floor space. There were more artists in other stores.

First Remote Setup for the Graphic Display System

Did the Press Reception for St. Charles ArtWalk last night. My first setup with the Graphic Display System. Lots of physical work. Met interesting artists. I was worn out when I got home. Got a slower start going to the gallery today. Started a very simple free watercolor. Seems I can be more free when I am tired.

Getting It Together

I got a hand truck to load paintings and display equipment onto. I made some new business cards and updated my website with a new look. http://web.me.com/repkey/Site/Welcome.html I did some Excel spreadsheets listing which paintings were meant for which show. Got cards and stickers made with prices for each piece. I need to get a receipt book and some bags. I am going to be disappointed if I don't sell anything.

Trying Watercolor Pencils

I have been thinking about using the watercolor pencils for a while . . . drawing and then taking water to spread the line in to a wash in places. I got to try it today at the Northside PaintIn at Hazelwood Community Center. Painting was a lot more delicate than what I usually do, but I really like it.

Made a Look Book

Put photos of my paintings into a book to take to art shows. Makes some that are not at the show available for viewing plus some that are. Sent my digitals to Wallgreen's and some turned out and some were cropped very strangely. Have to figure out what happened. I'm starting a new oil painting in my home studio. I am excited. Haven't started a new oil a home for quite a while. Got one going in the Artists of Grace studio though.

End of Summer is a watercolor I finished recently from a photo I took last summer.

Another in the Surprise Lilly Series

I started this last week at the gallery. It is another in the surprise lilly gladiola bouquet series. Some interesting abstract things happened in the background. Still working on the one I started at the gallery this week.
